Lassen Volcanic National Park

We got up this morning and left Nevada.  We drove 3.5 hours to Lassen.  I can't say what I was expecting but this park was way more than I thought it was going to be.  Michael was in his element again with all the rocks around.  Jacob just likes climbing and jumping on them ;)  This park is mostly hiking trails and we didn't have a lot of time.  They have a small area that has mudpots and fumaroles.  But it was a three mile hike and we just didn't have the time.  But the good news is that we will be Yellowstone for 3 days so we really won't be missing anything.  There are 4 different types of Volcanoes in this park!  I was disappointed not to be able to see the cone volcano.  There were lots of good views of Mt. Lassen.  The last time it erupted was in 1915.......100 years ago!

It was a very pleasant day up in the mountains in the low 70's all day.  When we came down from the mountains into Redding it was over 90 degrees!  The boys went swimming.  It is nice to be able to send them together and not have to sit and watch them the whole time.

                                                                        Mount Lassen

This was really interesting.  The mountain is called Chaos Crags.  Around 350 years ago the side of the mountain just broke away.  They call all the rocks that avalanched down Chaos Jumbles.  It covered the original forest, 150 feet in some places.  But the forest is coming back through the rocks.  It was very cool to see!!!
